About Korkeasaari, Helsinki Zoo

The island of Korkeasaari has a very long history; at first, it was used as a gunpowder storage and afterwards it ended up being a public park. Helsinki Zoo was founded in 1889.

Helsinki Zoo is one of the old zoos in the world and within the last few decades it has become active in nature conservation, e.g. participation in programmes to save endangered species.
 Helsinki Zoo is a member of many animal welfare associations around the world.
